Swim Testing

In order to ensure the safety of everyone at the waterfront, each camper will be offered an opportunity to complete a swim test during the afternoon of their arrival day. No camper is required to test. If a camper chooses not to complete a swim test, they are considered a yellow swimmer.
Swim tests will look like this:

  • Enter the water at the shallow end of the swim area.
  • Swim two lengths (down and back).
  • Exit the water at the shallow end of the swim area.
    • If the swimmer has not successfully completed this portion, the testing is complete. They are a yellow swimmer.
  • Ask the swimmer if they are able to jump in and come back up on their own.
    • If they say no (or attempt and fail), they move on to the next portion of the test.
    • If they say yes, they jump in and swim to the other side (away from diving boards).
  • Jump in the deep end with an appropriately fitted life vest and swim to the near side of the dock (close to the diving board).
  • Tread water for 1 minute.
  • Climb out without using the ladder, if possible.
    • If they did not do the deep swim, but successfully completed the life vest portion, they are a purple swimmer.
    • If they completed the deep swim AND the life vest portion, they are a green swimmer.
    • If a swimmer cannot climb out without the ladder but completed the shallow swim (but not the deep swim), they are a purple swimmer.
    • If a swimmer cannot climb out without the ladder but has completed all other portions of the test, they are a green swimmer.

The results of a camper’s swim test allow them to engage in all kinds of fun waterfront activities. Here is a quick breakdown:

  • Yellow swimmers can enjoy shallow swimming and kayaks/canoes with a life vest.
  • Purple swimmers can enjoy shallow swimming, deeper swimming and diving with a life vest, kayaks/canoes with a life vest, and tubing with a life vest.
  • Green swimmers can enjoy shallow swimming, deeper swimming and diving, kayaks/canoes with a life vest, tubing with a life vest, zip-lining with a life vest, and bounce sliding with a life vest.

Any camper who wishes to retest can do so ONCE. Retesting is offered on the first day of camp prior to the camper’s swim period. Retesting will not be offered any other time during camp.
